It is only on the finish this starts to falter, however the smack-up finale rescues it about ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and you may wisely dialogued, it has zero great problem within the way of life down their extremely unsightly name.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Motion picture Bulletin said “The film actions at the a fast pace, new dialogue try smooth and you can characterisations essentially active. Dick Powell and you may Evelyn Keyes direct this new cast skillfully, as detective was played with considerable aplomb by that individual identity, Lee J. Cobb.” [ nine ]
Richard Brody on The fresh new Yorker noted “Which terse and you may taut film noir is actually considering the newest personal and professional conflicts of one’s term profile, the fresh criminal genius (played of the Penis Powell) about an elegant unlawful gambling establishment. Brand new film’s journalist and you will manager, Robert Rossen, creates a great multidimensional chess game, getting mortal limits, ranging from Johnny, his employer (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s spouse (Ellen Drew), a great cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may a beneficial scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose cousin (Nina Foch) worked within gambling establishment and you will dated a corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The fresh caustically epigrammatic script, the latest cast’s suavely managed gestures away from like and you can possibility, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you may stylishly cocky images (in addition to his political conscience) get this pugnacious yet , intricate spectacle a low profile vintage of the category.” [ ten ]

Image keeps action and you will anticipation, and you can specific small matches from humor to add flavor. Expert shows by the Dick Powell, given that a gambling domestic overseer, and you will Lee J. Cobb, once the an authorities inspector, plus within the score . Whilst the patch employs a common development, the fresh new characterizations was fresh together with performances sufficient to overbalance. Dialog is actually terse and you may topical, avoiding the psychological, phoney touch. Uncommon camera basics come-along once in a while so you can heighten attract and you will briefly stop the interest. Good teamplay from the Robert Rossen, increasing due to the fact director-scripter, and Milton Holmes, totally new blogger and associate producer, together with helps with making it a delicate production.” [ 11 ]

It is primarily a point of seeing Mr. Powell undergo their paces stylishly when you’re a large throw regarding actors and you will actresses offer your conventional assistance. Evelyn Keyes performs the great nothing woman which brings about this new finest in your and you may Ellen Received is the smooth and slinky vixen who will get him with the jams. Thomas Gomez is actually fatty once the villain and you may Lee J. Cobb really does yet another able journey because the an exhausted police inspector who eventually shuts the scenario. A lot of taking and you may smoking is accomplished from the every concerned.” [ several ]
